OWHC LAUNCH NEW SEASON ON NEW ASTRO TURF

Posted by Chris Nightingale on 12 August 2015

A team comprised of current and former first XI players from the school took on an Old Wulfrunians side in the first game since work was completed last month.

The Water Efficient TigerTurf (WETT) sand-dressed pitch is an ideal surface for hockey and also for football and tennis.

“We wanted to test out the new surface and a match against the Old Wulfrunians was the obvious choice. They are the main external user of our pitch and with such a beautiful surface to play on, should inspire many students to take up playing hockey. It is a fantastic facility to have in school.” reported Nic Anderson, Deputy Head and boys’ hockey coach for Wolverhampton Grammar School.

The match marked the start of Old Wulfrunians pre-season preparations, which will include a club day at the school on Saturday 5th September from 11am as part of the national HockeyFest campaign. The campaign, run by England Hockey, is designed to gain publicity for clubs across the country in order to increase participation in the sport.

Old Wulfrunians has also agreed to continue the long term arrangement with the school to play their home matches at the site.

Club captain Richard Cartwright said: ‘It’s a pleasure to be committed to this fantastic development at Wolverhampton Grammar School which will ensure the club has access to a superb playing surface for years to come.
Anybody of any age who is interested in playing hockey with us will be most welcome at our training sessions and games.’

Old Wulfrunians Hockey Club was formed in 1953 and now has around 100 playing members, running five league, one non-league and one under 16 side every Saturday.
