Old Wulfs 2s 7-1 Old Wulfs 3s
2s: Chris Tutton (3), Haydn Rowlands (2), Ed Craddock (1), Ed Hole (1)
3s: Tom Ward
In an attempt to remember how to hold a stick before pre-season starts, the seconds and thirds played at Aldersley on Saturday. The 2s started strongly, O’Sullivan forcing his way into the D and lifting the ball forwards for Rowlands to get the final touch. More goals soon followed, with Craddock driving into the D and finishing calmly and Tutton deflecting a Hole cross into the corner. A Hole short corner and another goal from Tutton then took the score to 5-0 at half time.
After half time the thirds began to create some chances and controlled the game for long periods. They were rewarded for their pressure when Tom Ward was found in the D after good work down the right, and he beat Dillworth to reduce the deficit. Later in the half Rowlands restored the five goal lead when he tapped in a Tibble shot that he ‘thought was going wide’, before Tutton completed his hat trick with a penalty flick.
There was time for a moment of comedy before the end of the game when a quick break nearly produced a fantastic goal. Hemmings won the ball at the back and found Tutton on the right of the 3s D, and he slipped the ball into the path of Hole, in 10 yards of space and with just the keeper to beat. Reminiscent of a medieval knight with sword in hand Hole charged, stick raised, a look of determination on his face, and swung at the ball first time. He later said he was aiming for top corner, but as with many things, the end result you see in your head can be very different to the one that actually takes place. The end result in this case was Hole lying flat on his face as the ball rolled away towards the opposite touchline. Final score 7-1, a good run out for both teams.
