A top of the table clash, and it was every bit as competitive as you would expect. Sutton had won all their matches and only let in 2 goals all season.
Old Wulfs started well making their passes count and quickly closing down Sutton when they had possession. On 5 minutes Old Wulfs put together a useful set of passes down the right wing and Adam Tustin was in the D to score our first goal. We were then dominant for the next 20 minutes, with Sutton’s attacks not troubling Steve Saunders in goal. After around 15 minutes Gary o’Sullivan scored our second goal.
Sutton lifted their game and scored with about 10 minutes of the first half to go. However Old Wulfs were still attacking and Puv scored from a really well struck short corner to give us a 3-1 lead at half time.
The second half saw Sutton change the attack to 2 men up front with 4 in midfield, this worked better for them and they put us under more pressure. However we were still able to put some great passing moves together and still looked dangerous. Sutton managed to score 2 goals, one after a controversial foot decision against Old Wulfs, Sutton scoring while Old Wulfs were still trying to understand why the hit had been given.
At 3-3 it was nail biting for Old Wulfs, but after another good move up the right Adam Tustin crossed the ball to Gary o’Sullivan to slot home Old Wulf’s winner.
With three minutes to go there was an incident between Gary o’Sullivan and one of Sutton’s defenders, Sutton complaining that Gary had been too hard on the defender who was a junior. One of Sutton’s substitutes decided the only action to take was to do a rugby net tackle on Gary from behind! Their substitute was red carded and their barrack room lawyer a yellow carded with about 3 minutes to go. The umpires were unboubtedly relieved to blow the final whistle.
It was a great performance by Old Wulfs with some great passing and team work against a strong Sutton team who were somewhat unnerved by an opponent who took the game to them.
