Old Wulfs welcomed Wolverhampton to the Grammar School for the always competitive derby game. On a warm evening, it was probably a good thing that there was a match squad of some fifteen players, including University returnees Ryan Harding and Matt Jarocki.
Wolverhampton started the game strongly, dominating the midfield and pressuring the home side when they had the ball. This caused a string of silly mistakes from Wulfs in the first half, which gave the visitors the upper hand.
It didn’t take long for the pressure to count when Wolverhampton scored from a penalty corner. They decided to go for a straight strike, and although it wasn’t hit very cleanly, it had just the right amount of top on it to loop up over Colin’s kicker, and find the backboard to make it 1-0.
Wolverhampton continued their dominance after that goal, and Wulfs continued to make silly errors, often passing the ball straight to the opposition in their own half – a certain recipe for disaster.
When the ball was given away cheaply for another time, Wolverhampton took their chance to go 2-0 up. An overload inside the Wulfs D saw one of their players receive a rebounded shot and flick neatly into the net over the logged goalkeeper.
Old Wulfs, as has seemed to be the case so far this summer league, waited to be behind before they could muster any decent hockey. They finished the half strongly, passing the ball a lot better and going close with a string of chances. But these were chances that were not taken, with Sam Aldersley, Ryan Harding and Will Ashworth having the best of them.
The second half played out in much the same way – Wolverhampton dominating play and scoring one more goal, and Old Wulfs having to make do with a few break-away chances that were not converted. Not a great day at the office, and still yet to register a win in this year’s summer league. Sad face.
