|Result||L 1 - 8|
Our correspondent Paul Fisher reports on the 5ths worst result of the season: a frantic first half saw Lichfield score twice and hit the post twice as their young and skilful players pushed the older and less mobile OW defence to its limits. OW did manage a few decent moves when John Murray, Phil Carless and James Fisher were abe to get into the game. The half time score of 2 - 0 to Lichfield (who had been playing with 10 players as one of their number had not arrived for the start of the game) was probably flattering to OW.
At half time OW recognised that their passing needed to be more accurate and that they needed to protect possession more effectively, and 5 minutes into the half Phil beat 3 Lichfield defenders, passed to John who squared the ball across the goal for James to smash the ball into the goal - the half-time talk had had an impact. OW continued to try an press forward, but the 11th Lichfield player arrived and they duly pushed another player forward....by half-way through the half Lichfield had extended their lead with another 4 goals. With 5 minutes to go OW won a short corner, the direct shot being saved on the line by a defender having eluded the keeper - by then Lichfield had scored another goal and they scored yet another just on the final whistle. So, a 1 - 8 defeat. Ultimately OW were undone by a younger team who were also skilful players. Skill and determination of Ray Jeff in midfield and a very good performance from Ben Wall were, even when allied to the outlets provided by John, Phil and James not enough to counter the pace in the Lichfield team.
And so on to the very local derby v OW 6ths next week......
