Fifths travelled to Stone to play Stafford Fifths this week, and the team talk emphasised the need to defend from the front and retain possession. The first fifteen minutes saw OW dominate play but nearly get caught on the break, and both keepers making saves to keep scores level at 0 - 0. OW then won a short corner, which was converted by Nic Anderson to give us a deserved lead. Stafford worked hard and enjoyed more pressure as the first half went on, and on twenty five minutes got their reward when they scored after OW failed to clear their lines effectively - so 1 - 1 at half time.
The second half started with both teams trading possession and chances for the first twenty minutes, with quite a lot of scrappy play as neither team could gain control of the game. Captain Andy Hamilton pushed forward from defence to take a free hit in the Stafford half, and from his powerful cross Josh Lait put the ball in the net to make it 2 - 1 to OW. Within a minutre Stafford equalised with a goal in open play. OW changed formation to put three up front and try and force the win but were unable to break down a dogged Stafford defence.
A frustrating afternoon where OW did not achieve the quality of possession or play that we have in previous games; we must look for an improved performance against Leek next week.
