|Result||W 5 - 1|
Having volunteered to write the match report when…
...was probably not one of my brighter ideas, especially when this was probably one of the best performances the 5ths have put in this season. With two goals for both Ian Wall (thanks in no small part to his son!) and Nic Anderson and the team’s youth policy paying dividends with Ray Jeff getting the fifth, this was probably the most comfortable win thus far this season.
The game opened brightly for both sides, but Old Wulfs looked the more settled team from the start and for once were actually delivering on our Captain’s exhortations to retain possession and not let younger legs run around us. The result was that we went two goals up in the first 25 minutes. However, the last 10 minutes of the half saw Old Wulfs fall back into some bad habits and the back line had their work cut out dealing with a number of Wednesbury breakaways and short corners, one of the latter resulting in a goal for Wednesbury. So half time saw Old Wulfs winning 2-1, but by no means assured that victory was in the bag.
The first five minutes of the second half was no better for Old Wulfs and again Wednesbury could easily have pulled level early on, but then we took the game by the scruff of the neck, started to pass the ball around well and retain possession again. A third goal for Old Wulfs was the reward and as the Wednesbury lads’ heads appeared to drop a little we took advantage and scored a further two for what ended up being a relatively comfortable win.
In short, a well-umpired game, played in good spirit by both sides, in horrible weather and a great way to end the first half of the season - hopefully something we can take into the second half after Christmas.
Merry Christmas to all from the 5ths!
