The 5ths began their team talk with the now customary introductions, welcoming Tom Maundrell for his first game and long time member Peter Holmes for his first outing of the season. Our opponents, Stafford 4ths, had won both of their previous games so we set up with a 5 man midfield (including moving Bob Munn into midfield to keep the aggregate age of the back five under 300...) with the aim of closing down play and then using our pace from either wing to support lone forward Simon Heron; and this largely worked for the first half, which ended honours even at 0 - 0. We were helped by the fact that Stafford only had 10 players due to a late cry-off.
The second started in the same style that the first had ended. Simon Heron putting in a lot of work up front with James Fisher and Tom Maundrell getting up to support from the wings. We created a few opportunities, but did not really threaten the Stafford goal and gradually Stafford took the risk of pushing more players forward. Their first goal came from a short corner when their forward finished well from a lucky rebound from Steve Saunders save from the first shot. In trying to get an equaliser we lost some of our positional discipline and Stafford scored two further goals from break aways when they had an unmarked player in our defensive circle on both occasions, running out 3 - 0 winners.
It was a disappointing end having closed out the younger Stafford midfield for much of the game.
