Old Wulfs 4ths welcomed second placed Lichfield 5ths to a very cold afternoon at WGS. The opposition started much the brighter and within 20 minutes the youthful unit had amassed a three goal lead.
Wulfs refused to give up the cause and gained a foothold in the game by hitting them with pace (Pearson, Duhra (S) and Rickets) and numbers. The first big chance fell to the skipper, an exquisite Cooper (Jr) aerial beat the last defender and the skipper took the shot on the bounce, the ball ricocheting off the keepers pads.
Minutes later the skipper found himself in the D surrounded by two defenders, he lifted the ball goalwards only for Duhra (S) to volley the lifted ball home. Next Duhra (S) found himself in the D and rifled a speculative shot, with the ball heading well wide the skipper deflected the ball past keeper. 3-2 game on.
Lichfield then realized the urgency of the situation and upped their game to craft another goal. There was still time for Wulfs to almost pull another one back. A bobbling cross from Duhra evaded the defender but agonisingly also evaded the skippers stick.
The second half was a quieter affair. Lichfield increased their lead but Wulfs continued to create chances. Duhra went just wide on the reverse, the skipper should have done better when 1 on 1 with keeper, his shot going well wide. There was almost an unlikely scorer when Carver went on a rampaging run from defence, his shot going just wide.
The team battled but couldn't find a breakthrough, at the death they conceded another goal. The score didn't accurately reflect the closely contested nature of the game. Refreshingly we fielded 4 teenagers (Murray, Rickets, Duhra (S) and Pearson) in the side this week and they all contributed to a good team performance.
Next week a six pointer against fellow strugglers Telford.
