Old Wulfrunians vs Cannock
Old Wulfs travelled on a muggy evening to Cannock side who have had a mixture of results in the summer league.
In the previous encounter Old Wulfs came from 2-0 down to snatch a well-deserved 2-2 draw. Old Wulfs started the game well with captain Humpherson’s words of inspiration still ringing in their ears. An early chance presented itself when Birch fired a ball across the Dee for Litchy to run on to, however I slight hesitation meant it just evaded Litchy’s stick. Ablard opened the scoring when he made an over lapping run on the left for Litchy to play the ball in to Ablard’s path. Ablard running along the baseline then nutmeg the keeper to put Old Wulfs 1-0 up. Old Wulfs were full of confidence and a high Old Wulfs press led to Cannock conceding a short corner. Birch put the resulting short away with a strike into the bottom left corner for 2-0. Old Wulfs went 3-0 up after George found himself some space in the Dee after Dave Cartwright had made the hard work down the right. George’s initial shot was saved and Birch slotted in the rebound. 3-0 at half time to Old Wulfs.
The half time break was exactly what Cannock needed to regroup and seemingly knock Old Wulfs out of their stride. Cannock should have been down to 10 players early in the second half for a shove on Birch as he made his way into the Dee, but no short nor cards were shown. Old Wulfs then started to get tired legs in the heat with much of the midfield not having a break. Cannock started getting short corners frequently throughout the second half and seemed to be all they were playing for. The short corners were what turned the game for Cannock with 4 of their 5 goals coming from their drag flicker. The final score was a 5-3 win for Cannock, who offered little other than a short corner routine, albeit a very good one.
Old Wulfs were the better side throughout the game and were unlucky to lose the match.
