Match Report

Old Wulfrunians 4 – 5 Telford

Telford were extremely fortunate in their win, I can only describe them as competent yet unremarkable. Things started brightly for Old Wulfs pressing well and passing the ball around nicely, whilst defending the marking was tight and through out the game Telford were forced to play long balls which majority went off the end of the pitch. Despite the good start, it was Telford who went a goal up, through a short corner; however despite previous results against Telford (losing 11-1 and 10-5) Telford struggled to build on their lead. Old Wulfs reacted well to going a goal behind and flurry of goals starting firing in for Old Wulfs, all coming from open play following a patient team play and unselfish passing in the D, backed up by some great reaction saves from Luke and strong defending. Griff started the turn around, followed by a brace from Birch and a goal from Roberts. Telford rounded the half off by pulling a goal back from another penalty corner. 4-2 at half time.

In the second half Old Wulfs began to tire and Telford were able to gain a foothold in the game, with a tremendous amount of good fortune. Their first bit of fortune was the awarding of another penalty corner for the ball striking Brown high on the thigh, however the initial shot was going well… well wide of the goal, Telford scored the resulting penalty corner. Telford’s luck continued with them escaping conceding penalty corners despite defenders hit the ball deliberately off the back line, and finally Telford’s luck continued when they were not penalised for squaring up to Old Wulfs players, throwing terrible challenges in and despite a reminder from the league for players to respect the umpires, they continued to question and argue with them at every opportunity. Telford manage to steal the win through only scoring on short corners, Old Wulfs dominated the play, played a much more complete game and deserved more from the game, however this performance highlighted how the team has progressed so well this season.
