Wednesbury 0-4 Old Wulfs
Scorers: Stu Upton, Chris Tibble, Chris Tutton, Martin Jandu
The seconds continued their positive start to pre-season with a comfortable win against Wednesbury. With skipper Chris Nightingale unavailable Alex Thompson stepped into the breach in the scorching afternoon sun to lead the side to their second victory in a row.
In the early stages Wulfs dominated proceedings, with the ball rarely leaving the Wednesbury half as our forwards put constant pressure on the home defence. The reward was two goals in the first 10 minutes, first with Upton scoring after a poor clearance before good build up play in the midfield allowed Tibble to sweep home a second. Wednesbury soon rallied and forced their way back into the game, making the remainder of the half competitive, but solid defensive work from Thompson and Gareth Minton meant they never looked like scoring.
The second half was similar to the first, with Wulfs controlling much of the play and quickly dealing with any Wednesbury attempts to get back into it. We passed the ball around nicely, playing good hockey and rarely giving away possession cheaply, and another quick-fire double midway through the half sealed the victory. First Tutton fired into the corner from the top of the ‘D’ before Jandu added a fourth to put the game beyond doubt.
Another good performance, and with one friendly left before the real work begins we have every reason to feel optimistic about the season ahead.
