Match Report

Finchfield 2 - 3 Old Wulfrunians

The game started slowly either both team finding their feet and adjusting to a pitch that was falling apart at the seams (literally!) with a new centre back partnership of the two Daves, this would make for a good test against a strong Finchfield side. Old Wufs took the lead through a Dave Ward short corner after a good spell of sustained pressure. However Old Wulfs were immediately pegged back to 1-1 when a Finchfield attacker lost his defender and slipped in at the back post. Old Wulfs unfazed by the set back continued to press and good work from the midfield and forwards caused problems and won a series of short corner. Ablard dispatched 2 rebounds off the keepers pads to make the score 3-1 at half time.

Despite Old Wulfs leading there was still a lot to be worked on as the ball pace was too slow and there was not enough communication across the team. Old Wulfs pressed forward to put the game beyond Finchfield, however good saves from the keeper kept the score line as it was. Finchfield grabbed a late goal to make for a nervous last 5 minutes, and almost pulled the game level except for an outstanding save from Aaron when facing a 3 on 1 situation. Finchfield were lucky to have 10 men on the pitch as Justin (lacking pace in his old age) flattened Birch as he beat him for pace. Overall a good competitive match, with just one week remaining Old Wulfs will look to close the summer league on a win.

Good performers from Kai, Sam and George, but the performances of the games were Aaron for keeping Old Wulfs in the lead and Dave C who made consyant wonder tackles to ensure the Finchfield forwards were left frustrated.
